Whilst adoptions are comparatively rare in contemporary Australia, they are nevertheless an important aspect of Family Law and arguably one of the most impactful events in the lives of those involved.  Reforms in legislation have acknowledged the life-long significance of an adoption and emphasised the need to ensure the process maintains a focus on the best interests of the child, both now and into adulthood. In the right circumstances, adoption can be a rewarding and powerful process through which the responsibilities of parenthood are taken seriously and independently of any direct biological connection.
